Who We Are

A Nigerian Non-Profit Advancing
Justice at the Intersection of Rights,
Climate & Development

Advocacy for the People through Law (AFPLAW) is a registered, not-for-profit,
non-political organisation working across Nigeria and Africa.

Our Vision

AFPLAW envisions a just, equitable, and resilient Nigeria and Africa where all people, without discrimination, fully enjoy their Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights — a future where every individual lives with dignity, has guaranteed access to quality healthcare, is protected from the adverse impacts of climate change, and benefits from inclusive, sustainable development that safeguards the rights of present and future generations.

Our Mission

AFPLAW is dedicated to advancing human rights, justice, and sustainable development in Nigeria and across Africa — through legal services, representation, policy advice, capacity building, collaboration, and preventive diplomacy at the intersection of human rights, climate change, health, and development.

Officially Registered

Built on a Solid Legal Foundation

AFPLAW is registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission of the Federal Republic of Nigeria as an Incorporated Trustee, governed by a formal Constitution and a Board of Trustees.

How We Work

Our Three Pillars

Three pillars, one mission — protecting the Economic, Social, and Cultural Rights of
vulnerable and underserved communities.

01

Legal Services & Strategic Litigation

Providing legal, human rights, and consulting services on ESCR issues related to climate change, health, and development. Representing individuals and communities before courts and tribunals to secure remedies for ESCR violations, and documenting climate-induced displacement, health inequities, and development-driven injustices through public-interest litigation.

02

Policy Reform & Capacity Building

Advising governments and organisations on policy frameworks, legislative reforms, and program implementation. Building the capacity of civil society, institutions, and individuals through training and technical support, and producing research and reporting on climate justice, the right to health, and development justice.

03

Preventive Diplomacy & Accountability

Collaborating with national human rights institutions and regional bodies to monitor and support ESCR obligations. Promoting preventive diplomacy, peacemaking, and strategic legal work to prevent conflicts, and empowering communities at the intersection of human rights, climate change, health, and development.

People First

Communities lead; we listen and respond.

Use Law Strategically

Targeted legal action for systemic change.

Build Knowledge

Equip partners through training and resources.

Push for Prevention

Prevent violations before they happen.

What We're Working Toward

Our Goals

Measurable commitments guiding our work through 2030.

Strategic Goals (by 2030)

  1. Legal Empowerment — Build networks of ESCR-focused lawyers, paralegals, and community advocates.
  2. Policy Influence — Secure adoption of progressive laws on climate justice, health rights, and development equity.
  3. Institutional Accountability — Strengthen monitoring by NHRCs and regional bodies to enforce ESCR obligations.
  4. Preventive Diplomacy — Establish early-warning mechanisms in 10 communities to prevent ESCR-related conflict.

Operational Goals

  • Litigation — File 15+ strategic cases annually on climate, health, and development rights.
  • Legal Aid — Represent 500+ individuals per year in courts and human rights mechanisms.
  • Documentation — Produce 4 policy briefs on ESCR violations with recommendations.
  • Community Clinics — Run quarterly legal aid clinics in 6 states on health, land, and climate justice.
