AFPLAW was founded by Dr. Sonny C. Onyegbula, a former United Nations Human Rights Expert, to put the law at the service of the people.

An international lawyer with LLB, BL, LLM in International Human Rights Law and LLD in International Law, Dr. Onyegbula brings decades of expertise in human rights, public international law, and preventive diplomacy to advance justice sector reform, conflict prevention, and transitional justice in Nigeria and beyond.

Under his leadership, AFPLAW delivers evidence-based advocacy, drives transformative law and policy reform, and empowers vulnerable communities at the critical nexus of human rights, climate justice, health, and sustainable development.

His work is grounded in a core conviction: the law must protect the most vulnerable and deliver justice where it matters most.

Dr. Onyegbula currently serves as Founder, Interim Chairman of the Board of Trustees, and Interim CEO, providing strategic leadership during the organization’s formative phase.
